With speculation rife on the summer transfer rumour mill when it comes to last season’s top goalscorer Kemar Roofe, BBC pundit Noel Whelan has now had his say on things and it’s clear he feels Leeds would be daft to let the 26-year-old potentially depart for free next summer when his existing deal expires.

Despite seeing his 2018/19 Championship campaign blighted with injuries, in spite of a slower second half of the campaign, Roofe still found the back of the net 15 times and chipped in with two assists and with the future of Marcelo Bielsa now sorted, most fans are hoping a new deal for him will be one of our next big announcements this summer.

Speaking recently Whelan spoke up Roofe’s importance to the club but admitted it was one of those juggling acts where if the expectation is we don’t have a lot of cash to splash in the transfer market, we have to ensure we don’t lose out on Roofe’s actual sale value.

“Your top striker is worth his weight in gold. If you want to keep him, you have to make him an attractive offer. He has come to his last year so he is in a strong position and can sign for an overseas club for nothing next January. You have to give him something to tease him with. We are talking about a £10million player. When you get into the last two years of a key player’s contract, you should be protecting your asset by adding another two years on. Considering we have no money to spend, are we going to throw £10million away by losing Kemar Roofe?”
