Phil Hay: Leeds in for Portuguese defender

|

According to Leeds reporter Phil Hay in his latest piece with The Athletic, Leeds are lining up a bit for Portuguese teenage central defender Diogo Monteiro.

Monteiro is capped for Portugal at an under 17s level, and will turn 18 years of age at the end of January. Reports this morning indicate that Leeds have identified the young prospect as a recruitment target for the club’s emerging talent programme in this transfer window, which would see him link up with the Whites’ academy set up.

Monteiro is currently part of the first team squad with Servette in the Swiss Super League, Switzerland’s top flight of football. They currently sit in second place in the league table, and impressively at the age of 17, Monteiro has registered three league appearances for them this season.

Leeds have already secured the signatures of Max Wober and Georginio Rutter from Red Bull Salzburg and Hoffenheim respectively, and are in the hunt to land 22 year old Moroccan World Cup star Azzedine Ounahi. A move for Diogo Monteiro would see the Whites continue to build the club’s developmental squad.

This window has already sparked speculation of loan moves for the likes of Joe Gelhardt, Max Dean, and Leo Hjelde, with the club looking for young talent to get some meaningful first team football. It would be interesting to see how Monteiro fits into the academy setup, and just how far down the line he could emerge as a first team talent.

We’ll keep you up to date with news around Diogo Monteiro, and fingers crossed we can bring the highly rated prospect to Leeds.
