Leeds Encouraged To Snap Up Released Villa Man (Not Adomah)

|

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has strongly encouraged the club to snap up hugely experienced centre-half Tommy Elphick following his release this summer by Aston Villa.

The 31-year-old has plenty left in his tank and having overcome injury issues previously, he was very impressive during a loan spell in the 2018/19 campaign out with Hull City, and Aston Villa recalled him in January to provide cover and he ultimately ended the campaign with 32 starts.

Available of a free and also hugely loved by fans of former club Bournemouth, he’s no stranger to wearing the armband as well so the player has plenty of plusses and of course, the heart of defence is expected to be shaken up this year.

Speaking to www.footballinsider247.com this week, Whelan said of the player.

“Leeds will be looking at him – I would be if I was in charge, absolutely. Leeds have looked at him before and he’d still be perfect for us. He’s a proper defender, aggressive, good in the air, commanding, a good player. You need players with Championship experience who know the league and we need a new centre-back, even if Pontus Jansson stays. He could be a great free signing and a great signing for next season.”

He’d certainly be good competition and cover regardless of what happens with Pontus Jansson in particular, and I wouldn’t imagine he’ll be on a wage that would be prohibitive, so I can certainly see the sense in this one.
