Young defender in Leeds for medical

|

Leeds United have been expected to complete the signing of the young Portuguese defender Diogo Monteiro from Swiss Super League side Servette for the past couple of weeks, and the 18 year old has now arrived in England as he prepares to undergo his medical ahead of the move.

Last week Vital Leeds looked at Leeds’ pursuit of Diogo Monteiro, and the expectation was that Leeds would complete the signing over the weekend. Monteiro just turned 18 on Saturday, and that alleviated some of the complexities for Leeds around signing youth players. Servette Technical Director and former Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos stated last week that the clubs were in advanced talks ahead of the proposed move, so it was really just a matter of time before the next major development in the move [via TDG].

Now, according to Leeds reporter Phil Hay in his piece this morning with The Athletic, the teenager is in England and set to undergo a medical ahead of completing his move to Elland Road.

Diogo Monteiro has been capped by Portugal at the national side’s under 17 level, and has a handful of first team appearances in the Swiss Super League with Servette to his name. He’ll join up with the academy set up at Leeds, and hopefully can make an impact there as the 2022-23 season progresses.

Monteiro’s medical marks the continuation of a busy morning in Yorkshire. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that USA and Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie has completed his medical with Leeds, and the club’s official announcement of his signing could happen today. At the other end of the transfer spectrum, 29 year old Spanish defender Diego Llorente looks to be heading the other way, ahead of a loan move with an obligation to buy at Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma.
