What Is It With Leeds & Penalties – Match Stats

|

Tuesday evening’s EFL Cup clash against Stoke City saw us welcome them to Elland Road having only recently taken a reasonably comfortable three points off them in our Championship clash back at the Bet365 Stadium.

With a 3-0 victory already under our belts against Nathan Jones’ side, manager Marcelo Bielsa did take the opportunity to shuffle the starting XI up a little bit and we saw some fresh faces once again.

With our usual possession, but no shots on target in the opening 45 minutes, late on in the first period Stoke hit us hard with two goals inside five minutes. 2-0 down at the half time break plenty would’ve been nervous, but second half we more got our acts together and Eddie Nketiah and Helder Costa tied the game up so off to penalties we went.

Sadly for us, it didn’t go our way.

Barry Douglas, Costa, Phillips and Nketiah made their efforts count, but unfortunately Jack Harrison’s attempt came back off the woodwork and with Stoke not missing, the League Cup is over for 2019/20.

With that said though, given the second half and the team selection, we should be taking the positives as the Cup was never a priority anyway this year.
