LUFC Christiansen – Not Good Enough

Leeds United head coach Thomas Christiansen admitted it was not good enough after seeing his side lose to Yorkshire neighbours Sheffield United.

The blades left Elland Road with all three points thanks to a late winner in a 2-1 win, but the blades could have been out of sight in the first half as they cut through a lacklustre Leeds defence.

Leeds never really recovered from conceding early in the game and Christiansen felt his side were too nervous.

‘You have to be more attentive than we were to concede a goal so early,” Christiansen told the BBC.

‘We managed to come into the game and from there it was a little bit better but still not good enough.

‘We were too nervous and complicated the situation too much.

‘We need to do more in games like this that are worth more than three points.’

Billy Sharp made his first return to Leeds since leaving the club in 2015 and he took less than two minutes to put the blades ahead as the visitors cut through the Leeds defence with ease.

Sharp could easily have had an hat-trick by half-time and only goalkeeper Andy Lonergan kept Leeds in the game as he twice denied Sharp with good saves.

Leeds managed to go in at the break level as Kalvin Phillips volleyed them level nine minutes before the break with their only effort on goal in the first half.

Leeds were tighter at the back at the start of the second half and they carved out two good opportunities with Samu Saiz hitting the post from distance and Ezgjan Alioski having an headed opportunity easily saved.

Sheffield United started to regain control in the final 15 minutes with the dangerous Leon Clarke twice testing Lonergan and they won the game with nine minutes remaining when David Brooks slid the ball home after an inch perfect pass from Mark Duffy.

The defeat was a second home defeat in a row for Leeds and they will now be looking to bounce back when they welcome Derby County to Elland Road on Tuesday evening.
