Loan-watch: Defender shines in debut

|

Leeds United fans will be delighted to hear that young right back Cody Drameh produced a high quality performance in his debut for Championship side Luton Town last night, as The Hatters’ late winner gave them a 1-0 victory against a struggling Cardiff City side.

Drameh started in a right wing back position for Rob Edwards’ side, and showed the head coach that he is more than capable of being a part of the team’s push to secure playoff football for promotion to the Premier League.

The 21 year old played just under 70 minutes in his debut, and showcased a wealth of both defensive and attacking qualities that took Luton fans pleasantly by surprise.

As seen in the above clip, Drameh pulled off some seriously good plays at each end of the field. His dangerous crossing and accurate long balls were difficult for Cardiff defenders to manage, and his speed and clever play along the right side proved that he can really be a nuisance when he gets forward – something that Leeds haven’t really seen from the full back positions too much this season. He won some free kicks with his tricky play and quick movements, and seemed to bring a lot of energy down the right flank for Luton.

Defensively, Drameh was sharp and displayed a strong positional sense. Despite getting forward a lot, the youngster can be seen getting back to make important tackles and interceptions, as well as playing the ball out nicely from the back.

With Luke Ayling back from injury and Rasmus Kristensen as another first team option, it was unlikely that Cody Drameh would have had much of a chance at getting meaningful game time at the right back position in the latter half of the 2022-23 campaign. With that in mind, the loan move makes sense for him to develop as a senior player.

If he can continue to put on performances like he did last night, he surely has a case to be in and around the Leeds United first team next season. Fingers crossed he can push on from an excellent debut, and can help Luton nail down their playoff position in the Championship.
