Leeds announce the signing of Weston McKennie

|

Leeds United have today announced the signing of Weston McKennie from Italian giants Juventus on an initial loan with an option to buy.

The deal was recently announced on the official club website and the Leeds Twitter account and is believed to be a €1.2m fee plus €33m buy option clause and add-ons. He will wear the number 28 shirt.

The 24-year-old will link up with fellow compatriots Brenden Aaronson, Tyler Adams and coach Jesse Marsch at Elland Road and will add some quality to the midfield as the club prepare for the second half of the season. The former Schalke midfielder comes with good experience having played over 90 games for the German Bundesliga side and has racked up 96 appearances for Juventus. He has also represented his country over 40 times since his debut in November 2017 against Portugal, a game in which he also scored his first International goal.

McKennie is well known for his versatility having played in multiple positions for Schalke, including striker, centre-back and full-back but his preferred position is in the heart of midfield, operating as a box-to-box midfielder. He has great attributes including his ability to win back possession, strong tackling, excellent passing and a fantastic engine. He also has the ability to chip in with goals and is a commanding figure from set pieces at either end of the field. He could make his debut in the trip to Nottingham Forest at the weekend.
