Is Hwang the answer? – opinion

Leeds United have been heavily linked with the South Korean in recent days, so, we thought we would take a look at him and ask the question, is Hwang Hee-Chan the answer to Leeds’s forward problem?

Jesse Marsch has said the club are actively seeking reinforcements before the transfer window closes on 1st September. The top priority must be a left-back and a forward. Marsch said in a recent interview when asked about the search for a striker “Striker, yes. How likely it is, is dependent on how things play out and what availabilities are of players.”

“We certainly don’t have a surplus of big amounts of money to go out to spend and bring in a huge transfer, but I think we’ve done a good job of evaluating players that are of high interest to us.”

“Then we’re waiting to see and having good communication with different clubs and agents and players to see if there might be flexibility and what their contracts are and what their situations are, (so) that we can still add a quality piece to what we’re doing.”

After moves for Charles De Ketelaere and Arnaud Kalimuendo came up short, The Whites have been linked to a whole host of players, including the Wolverhampton Wanderers forward, Hwang Hee-Chan.

So, what do we know about Hwang? Firstly Jesse Marsch knows the player well after working with him at Salzburg, and he knows exactly what he can expect from the 26-year-old. Hwang knows the system well and has Premier League experience. He could hit the ground running and Marsch would hope he could start to recreate the very impressive numbers he had under him when he registered 16 goals and 24 assists in 43 appearances.

A lot depends on the sort of deal Wolves would be looking for. If they are asking upwards of £20m, it might be too much for a forward who has failed to set the Premier League on fire. However, if it were a loan with an obligation, that could be very beneficial to Leeds, and indeed Hwang with the World Cup selections due to be finalised.

Let’s be honest here, Patrick Bamford is going to have spells out of the team, Joe Gelhardt is maybe too young to carry the burden of being the only goal-getter and Rodrigo is far from the perfect striker. The Spaniard has had a great start to the campaign, but Leeds can’t rely on the hope that he will get these numbers all season. It would be a massive gamble to not bring anyone in, and not one I would be excited about. I’m not convinced Hwang is the answer to Leeds forward problems, but I would rather we bring him in, if the deal is right, than not have anyone at all.

What do fans think, should we bring Hwang in? or are you happy with what we already have? Let us know in the comments.

Things haven’t worked out for Hwang at Wolves but his figures at Salzburg under Marsch were impressive. £25m is over priced but at £15m he would be a good signing
