“He’d see it as excess baggage”: Phil Hay discusses Leeds United’s transfer plans ahead of window

|

Leeds United aren’t expected to have a very busy transfer window this summer, even if they do win promotion to the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa has done a superb job with the Whites since taking over and they currently lead the way in the Championship. And, he has taken them to the top without a massive squad. Therefore, The Athletic reporter Phil Hay has indicated that the approach won’t change moving forward as he detailed where Leeds need to strengthen – with adding another striker not thought to be on the radar.

Leeds want to give Berardi a new deal and if he stays then you’ve got him, Cooper and AN other (possibly White but most likely someone else). Bielsa hasn’t carried more CBs than that at any stage at Leeds so he probably won’t start now. Likewise with Augustin. If he stays and Bamford remains in Bielsa’s plans, it wouldn’t be like Bielsa to go for a third forward. He’d see it as excess baggage.”

As touched upon, centre-back could be a major issue for the Yorkshire outfit if Berardi doesn’t stay, with his current deal expiring next month. With Brighton recently confirming that they expect to keep the talented Ben White next season, that would leave Liam Cooper as the only senior centre-back at Elland Road.

Will Leeds United be playing in the Premier League next season?

Yes

No

Even if the Seagulls are open to selling White, it’s believed that several top clubs have been monitoring the player after his performances for Leeds, with Chelsea strongly linked with the £25m-rated man earlier this season.

However, the immediate priority for all connected to Leeds will be to finish the job and win promotion. They boast a seven point advantage over third-placed Fulham with nine games left to play.
