Explained: Leeds defender gets valuable minutes for the u23s ahead of Luton clash

|

Barry Douglas represented Leeds u23s ahead of Saturday’s trip to Luton Town, playing 45 minutes of football as the Whites enjoyed a 2-0 win over Barnsley. The 30-year-old was replaced in the second half and should be in contention of making Leeds’ matchday squad over the weekend.

Douglas has made eight appearances in all competitions this season, racking up 422 minutes of football. The Scotland international’s last outing for Leeds came against Birmingham City on October 19. He’s been an unused substitute twice and left out of the matchday squad twice since then.

Stuart Dallas has been preferred at left-back while Leif Davis has been on the bench. Douglas might replace the latter, however, but it’s unlikely he’ll be handed his first Championship start since August. Leeds are coming off the back of three wins and two draws from their last five, so Marcelo Bielsa doesn’t need to make unenforced changes to his backline.

The Whites also boast the best defensive record in the second-tier (nine goals), so Douglas might have to be patient for opportunities. He built up his fitness on Monday and will have to work hard in training to try and stand out.
