Opinion: Marcelo Bielsa could start Leeds man against Luton, 28-year-old is an injury doubt

|

Marcelo Bielsa could start Gaetano Berardi at centre-back when Leeds travel to face Luton Town on Saturday. Liam Cooper is an injury doubt and could miss the trip to Kenilworth Road, but Berardi has returned at the perfect time to replace him.

The 31-year-old played for Leeds u23s against Barnsley on Monday and helped steer the Young Whites to a 2-0 win at Thorp Arch. Berardi won’t be 100% against Luton, but Bielsa is left with little option but to pick him due to Cooper’s untimely groin injury.

The 28-year-old has had various problems in recent weeks which could keep him out of action for the rest of the month, but Leeds’ impressive defensive record suggests they should still cope well with Berardi and Ben White at centre-back.

No side in the Championship have conceded fewer goals than United (9) and no side have kept as many clean sheets (8). It’s worth noting that six of their eight clean sheets have come when Berardi’s featured. The Swiss international has made nine league appearances and has been on the winning side six times.
