Interest in ‘electric’ winger: Rumour Watch

As per Sébastien Denis of Foot Mercato, Leeds’ number one target is Cody Gakpo of PSV Eindhoven who has been described as ‘electric‘.
With 21 goals and 15 assists in 42 games in all competitions in 2021/22, it’s clear that the 23-year-old has an eye for goal and an ability to create for others in equal measure.
Gakpo played in all three of UEFA’s premier club competitions over the course of the campaign, including a 2-goal and 1-assist performance in a thrilling 4-4 draw against FC Copenhagen in the Conference League round of 16.
Despite his tender age, the winger was captain for almost half of the games this season, scoring the winner and lifting the trophy in the KNVB Beker final against Ajax.
As well as his club form, Gakpo translated his quality into international football, scoring against Wales in the UEFA Nations League.

Reasons to believe this rumour
- Gakpo’s fine record in regards to goal involvements could make him an ideal replacement for Raphinha, who was the club’s top goalscorer last year. Those goals will need to come from somewhere else if a move elsewhere goes ahead.
- PSV’s attacking talents tend to go for affordable prices: Donyell Malen joined Borussia Dortmund for £27 million last summer, the same price that Steven Bergwijn joined Spurs for in January 2020, while mercurial Mexican Hirving Lozano signed for Napoli for £40 million, a fee still far below the £65 million price that Leeds are demanding for Raphinha.
- Marsch’s requirement for experience within his squad would be met with Cody Gakpo despite his age, with experience in Europe, as captain, with a top national team and as a trophy winner. His role within any side is one far beyond his years.

Reasons to NOT believe this rumour
- His appearances as club captain suggest that he is highly regarded in Eindhoven, making any deal more tricky.
- The Dutchman has also been linked to Arsenal, who may be an enticing move with European football, although this has cooled over the past few weeks.
If Raphinha is to leave, I think Gakpo should definitely be one of the main targets to replace him. His profile is very similar to that of the Brazilian, while his experience and quality in the final third may be exactly what we need at Elland Road next season. What are your thoughts?
