The undisclosed fee capture of Jay-Roy Grot from NEC Nijmegen back in the summer of 2017 hasn’t proven to be one of Leeds United’s better deals in the transfer market in recent years.

The Dutch youngster came in as one for the future, but he’s only made four starting appearances for us, with a further 19 showings from the substitutes bench and the attacker only contributed one goal.

Different fans have different takes on his performances though, but he wasn’t for manager Marcelo Bielsa and last summer we sent him back out to the Eredivisie for a season with VVV Velno. That was better for the lad as he made 19 starts and 14 substitute showings, returning six goals and three assists playing predominantly as a left sided forward/winger.

With the Yorkshire Evening Post reporting this week that we were likely to try and send him out on loan again, and with Scottish side Hearts linked, some old disagreements about Grot seemed to come out on social media as fans weighed up the move. Vitesse Arnhem are also namechecked as having an interest.

With a strong belief that he cost us £750,000 most seem to agree a very good loan spell would be in our best interests to make some profit on him and then move on, but if he returns with some confidence and better settles he could be an option for Bielsa with all the talk about wingers.
