Manchester City have officially announced the signing of Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United according to ManchesterEveningNews.

The 26 year old defensive midfielder signs a six year deal for a reported fee of £45m, whilst Darko Gyabi has completed the switch the opposite way to Leeds United for an undisclosed fee, thought to be around £5m.

Phillips will link up with Pep Guardiola and England team mates like Kyle Walker, Jack Grealish and John Stones to name a few.  He has been given the number 4 shirt and has been brought in to replace the departing Fernandinho after nine years at the club.

Phillips said ” Obviously it is a good feeling. Finally got everything sorted and I’m officially a Manchester City player which I’m very happy about.

I think over the past few years at Leeds, I’ve done really well. I got into the England squad as well and I’ve done really well there. I’m very appreciative of what I have done at Leeds and everyone I’ve been around and I just wanted to test myself on the next step with players with an unbelievable work ethic and an unbelievable manager as well.”

After coming through the Youth Academy at Leeds, Phillips has progressed into the first team and was an integral part of the side that won promotion from the Championship.  His displays in the Leeds midfield got him into the England set up and he helped them go all the way to the Euro 2020 finals, narrowly losing to Italy on penalties.

He has now chosen to sign for Manchester City and will hope to add some trophies to his name.

He added  “I am absolutely delighted to have joined Manchester City. City have again proved to be the best team in the country with an amazing squad and a manager in Pep Guardiola who is rightly considered to be the finest in the world.

“To be able to play under Pep and learn from him and his coaching staff as well as be part of such a fantastic squad is a prospect that I am incredibly excited about. City are a world-class club with world-class staff and facilities and it’s a dream come true to have joined the club.

“Now I can’t wait to get started and to look to try and help the team to go on and achieve more success.”
