Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino says he wants to reduce the overheads at the club stating the players have been paid too much at Elland Road.
Cellino was talking after Leeds finished a disappointing season in the championship with a 1-1 draw against Derby to finish in 15th place in the table.
The new owners stated when he took over at Elland Road in April that he wants promotion back to the Premier League in two-years and he wants to build the team around good young players and not paying over inflated wages to what he called ‘the wages player`.
Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, Cellino said, ‘Our overheads are still a little bit too high for a Championship club.
‘Some of them are more like Champions League than Championship.
‘We have to spend our resources on buying good young players with talent and keep the wages down.’
‘The biggest problem we have is that we do not have enough humility to approach a Championship season.
‘We need humility – humility from the coach, humility from the chairman and humility from the fans.
“We have to change our mentality immediately. We need to work, work, keep the club healthy, try to break even and invest in the player and not ‘the wages player`. We have to improve our resources by bringing in proven young players with talent and keep the wages down.”
With the season now over, Leeds are likely to reveal their released and retained list in the next few weeks and they have a number of experienced players out of contract who were likely to be among the big earners at the club.
El Hadji Diouf, Michael Brown, Luke Varney, Danny Pugh, Paul Green, Adam Drury and Jamie Ashdown are amongst those out of contract at Elland Road.
