It may not have been a great weekend for Leeds United fans given our 2-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers last Saturday, but there were two reasons to smile when it came to our youngsters who are out learning their trade in the season of 2018/19.

Having been dropped recently, or shall we say rested, Mallik Wilks returned to the Doncaster Rovers starting lineup for their game against Gillingham and he popped up with a goal in the 3-3 draw.

It makes it five goals in 15 starts, and one substitute appearance, for the 19-year-old so far this season.

Fellow youngster, Jay-Roy Grot also found himself on the scoresheet, as the Dutch Under 21 international came off the bench for VVV Venlo in their 2-0 victory over ADO Den Haag.

It was the 20-year-old’s second goal in seven starts, and two substitute appearances so far this season.

A number of fans were delighted with the distraction their progress brought on social media.

Whether either do have a future with us is open for debate as it always is with youngsters learning their trade out on loan, but it’s good to see they are keeping that option open by performing for their temporary clubs.

Over to others to decide what the future holds though as potential only gets you so far in the game.
