It`s been a quiet week by Leeds United standards but even though there was still enough to keep Leeds firmly focused in the Media spotlight.
Monday: Leeds United announced a 20 man squad for the forthcoming tour of Germany which includes 5 players on trialists. They are taking two goalkeepers; Nick Hamman and Scott Loach and ex-forest midfielder David Prutton, Leon Constantine and Curtis Weston join in the fun.
Tuesday: Leeds arrive in Germany and begin preparations for tomorrows game with Union Berlin.
Wednesday: Leeds lose 2-0 against Union Berlin with Leeds fielding what could be a bit more like the team for the first game of the season. Dennis Wise was still happy with the game even though it ended in defeat saying ‘It was another good work out and the team are beginning to work well together’.
Thursday: Dynamo Dresden announced that Saturday`s game had been called off based on police advice. Whilst they did not explain any further reason for this decision it seems that they may have been expecting trouble. It`s very sad that English clubs still seem to have this stigma attached to them for trouble when we have been able to get our own house in order. Clubs in Europe need to take a closer look at there own countries poor record on the terraces and look at how we have managed to make the English game a more family friendly experience with grounds now up to a very good comfortable standard in most cases.
Friday: Leeds act very quickly to arrange an alternative fixture for Saturday and are moving country to play FC Slovan Liberec of the Czech Republic. The club also help out lots of Leeds fans who are stranded in Germany and arrange a coach to take around fifty supporters to the game.
The media are at it again! They have highlighted the fact that Leeds players haven’t been paid for the month of June. What they seemed to have forgotten is that the players agreed to this when talking to the administrators by accepting a wage deferral at the end of last season.
Trialist David Prutton announces he would love to stay at the club and talks about the potential of the current squad and also the honour it would be to play for a club with such a distinguished history. A player with his experience at the top level would certainly help with a few youngsters bound to be brought through the ranks to play an important part in the new season.
Saturday: Leeds lose 1-0 to FC Slovan Liberec in in the Czech Republic after some sloppy defending lead to the opening goal. Despite Leeds making a number of good chances through Beckford, Constantine and Kandol the game resulted in another defeat for the squad. That said, it was another good workout for the lads and would have only increased a sense of “team spirit” amongst them.
eeds are now of back in Germany to play there last friendly on Monday night against FC Energie Cottbus. This will be a great test for the Leeds players, against a team that finished 13th in the Bundesliga last season. Following the match, Leeds United will be returning to the United Kingdom in order to continue their pre-season preparations. First up is a match against Burnley at Turf Moor, a game that will likely see Leeds United face their ex-striker Robbie Blake for the very first time.
