Report: Leeds United’s move for influential £5.4m-rated star refuted

|

Leeds United will not be making a move to sign Swansea City forward Andre Ayew in January, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon.

There had been reports that we were set to tempt the Jacks with a lucrative offer for the in-form Ghanaian, as boss Marcelo Bielsa is determined to reconnect with the player he worked with at Olympique de Marseille.

Bielsa formed a strong relationship with Ayew during their time together at the Orange Velodrome, and would not feel the 30-year-old needs a bedding in period before he could become a regular aspect of our Championship side.

Ayew, for his part, was not said to be pushing for a move out of the Liberty Stadium having rediscovered his form working under Steve Cooper and becoming an influential player in South Wales this season – hitting nine goals in 21 appearances across all competitions and penning four assists – but has eyes on returning to the Premier League.

The 76-cap left-forward’s dream return to the top-flight may have to be with someone other than Bielsa in the dugout, though, as Nixon has refuted the suggestion of United making a move to sign Ayew in January.

When asked by a Swansea supporter on Twitter if there was any truth in the rumours linking the Whites with a bid for Ayew, Nixon replied: “Don’t think that’s right.”

Would you back a January move for Ayew?

Yes

No

Bielsa has shown an opposition to trusting players that he does not feel have become accustomed to his tactics since his arrival at Elland Road, particularly this season with his treatment of Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah.

The Gunners prospect was signed on a one-season loan deal on Deadline Day after the sale of last season’s top ‘scorer Kemar Roofe, but has since played just 299 minutes in the Championship and is yet to start a league game for the club.

Ayew made 30 appearances for Marseille during Bielsa’s one season at the helm of the Ligue 1 side, starting 28 while scoring 11 goals and penning six assists.

The £5.4million-rated Ghanaian is contracted to Swansea until the summer of 2021.

In other Leeds United news, a prominent pundit has lauded a £60k-p/w man as an ideal January signing for the Whites to chase.
