Leeds Word On The Tweet

“Stay classy”, “Right to a certain point” – Many Leeds fans react to ex-player’s claim

Many Leeds United fans have been reacting on social media in response to Burnley striker Chris Wood’s recent claim, as he reflected on his time at Elland Road and the atmosphere created by the fans.

Wood moved to West Yorkshire from Leicester City in 2015 when the Whites splashed out a reported £3.24million to bring the New Zealander to Elland Road, on the back of a one-goal season with the Foxes in the Premier League.

He had spent the latter half of the 2014/15 term on loan with Ipswich Town after struggling for minutes in the top-flight at the King Power Stadium, but failed to score in any of his eight Championship appearances for the Tractor Boys.

The 57-cap striker’s spell with United was far more promising than his time at Portman Road, as Wood scored 13 goals across all competitions in his maiden term before firing 27 in 44 league games in ’16/17.

Wood’s strikes for the Whites led to a return to the Premier League in 2017 with Burnley, when the Clarets paid a club-record fee of around £15m for his services.

The Auckland native has since been regularly in amongst the goals in the top-flight with two 10-goal campaigns and is already on six for the term this season, and hopes that we can one day join him in the Premier League.

“At Leeds, I had a bit of a rough patch, it wasn’t always smooth sailing, but in the end, it came good and it was a good time [in my career],” Wood told Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday (24/11/19, 11:30 start).

Would you welcome Wood back to Elland Road?

Yes

No

“Passionate is definitely a word for it [describing Leeds’ fans]. When they are behind you and they love you, they are one of the best [sets of] fans in the country. But if they don’t take to you or have a bit of a hold against you, they will let you know about it and they let you know it very loudly and very vocally.

“But that’s because they have such a big fan base and they have high expectations of what the club should be [achieving], and hopefully they will get back [into the Premier League] one day.”

Here are some of the reactions offered after Wood’s claim was shared on social media…
