Kevin Blackwell insists Peter Ridsdale should not be held solely responsible for the club’s stunning financial demise.

The former Elland Road chairman’s overspending drove Leeds to the brink of financial ruin – and ultimately saw Blackwell installed as manager.

Ridsdale returns to Elland Road with his current club Cardiff this weekend for the first time since his departure in March 2003.

Blackwell said: ‘If it was not for Peter Ridsdale I would not be here so I will warmly shake his hand.

‘It is ironic that another man’s misfortune is another’s opportunity. As soon as the door slammed in his face it opened in mine, so I can’t knock him.

‘The crying shame is that the club was in such good shape, they were looking to be the team of the decade and then poor decisions were made, not just by Peter Ridsdale, the whole club made poor decisions,’ told the club’s official website.
