Leeds United have submitted an offer to sign Mainz midfielder Jean-Paul Boetius, a report from German outlet Bild has claimed.

Boetius has scored eight goals in 60 appearances in all competitions for Mainz since joining them in 2018 from Feyenoord in his native Holland – for whom he has one cap at senior international level.

Now it seems as though the 26-year-old – who is valued at £4.32million by Transfermarkt – is attracting plenty of attention from elsewhere.

According to the latest reports from Bild, Leeds have made an opening bid for Boetius, who is also attracting attention from a number of other clubs.

It is thought that fellow Championship promotion winners Fulham, La Liga outfit Sevilla and Serie A side Fiorentina are all also keen on a move for the midfielder ahead of the new season.

As things stand, there are two years remaining on Boetius’ contract with Mainz, securing his future with the Bundesliga club until the end of the 2021/22 season.

This is an interesting one for Leeds to consider.

Boetius’ experience at top-flight level in places such as Holland and Germany could certainly be useful for the Whites, as they prepare for their own long-awaited return to the Premier League next month.

Indeed, the level of interest there is in Boetius only serves to highlight his potential, meaning winning this transfer battle would make this something of a statement of intent from the Yorkshire club.

Add to that the fact that at 26-years-old, the midfielder can still make a contribution to Marcelo Bielsa’s side for many years to come, and it does seem as though this could be a useful piece of business for the Whites.
