Pundit Worries January Decision Will Cost Leeds After Defeat

|

With Leeds United losing slight ground in this season’s battle for promotion to the Premier League following the harsh defeat to Sheffield United last weekend, former player and now BBC pundit Noel Whelan fears that a January decision will now come back to bite us.

With plenty in the Elland Road faithful wanting to see Victor Orta and manager Marcelo Bielsa strengthen our options at the top of the pitch, we obviously didn’t do that and the best we can tell from the speculation, we didn’t necessarily miss out on anyone either as it seems all our eggs were in Daniel James basket.

With a lack of clinical edge and a failure to convert our numerous chances into efforts on target, and then goals, Bielsa has addressed the problem himself in recent weeks, so it’s easy to see where Whelan is coming from and plenty of fans will fear the same.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds following the game, he explained.

“I said in January we needed a strike force and power. We’ve got one striker now. Two all season. You can’t go through a whole season with two strikers. Look at what Sheffield United did, they went out and got Madine; he wasn’t available today through suspension but they ticked off a certain criteria of what they want. They’ve got a big striker in Madine who can batter people and cause problems, Billy Sharp who can run in behind, Connor Washington who can run in behind, David McGoldrick who is busy around the 18-yard box. They’ve got goals in them and they’ve got impact players who can come on as well.”

He does have a point, but Patrick Bamford has four in the last six and we do have Kemar Roofe to welcome back to fitness before the end of the campaign. It is an obvious worry though.
