Leeds United’s new signing, Maximilian Wober who joins from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg has spoken about his switch to the Premier League and what it means to play for Leeds.

Leeds moved quickly to seal the deal for the 24-year-old, who becomes Jesse Marsch’s first signing of the January transfer window. Having penned a four-and-a-half-year-deal, Wober comes with good experience, having played in the Champions League and with over 120 appearances for the Austrian Bundesliga side. He has also represented his country on 13 occasions. The Whites are looking to strengthen in key areas and Wober will be good competition in the defence, being able to play at centre-back, left-back as well as a number six.

Starting his career at Rapid Vienna, he made 24 appearances for the club in the Austrian Bundesliga, Austrian Cup and UEFA Europa League, before signing for Dutch giants Ajax in August 2017 and was handed his international debut in the same year. After some fine performances, he was signed by Spanish side Sevilla in January 2019 on loan. However, that spell ended after eight months when he joined Red Bull Salzburg making him the Austrian Bundesliga’s most expensive signing ever in August 2019, pairing up with current Leeds coach, Jesse Marsch.

Wober said, “It’s a massive challenge for me. I mean, I’ve already seen a lot, I have played for Ajax, played for Sevilla and now three and a half years for Salzburg coming out to Leeds, a club with such a big history with such a big tradition is definitely something special, it was always a dream, arriving to Elland road is amazing. First of all, I have to work hard to get into the team and play good to get accepted in the dressing room, and then grow with every opportunity, again, I’m just gonna go to play where the team needs me, wherever the team needs me the most, doesn’t matter if it’s left-back, centre-back if it is the number six I’m fine with everything.”

“I’m gonna give everything to my best and I’m now experienced playing as a left-back and I really liked it, also being a little bit more offensive. The last years I’ve played centre-back we’ll see where the journey goes, and one of the most difficult parts about coming to a new club and everything is you have to feel comfortable to get settled, to get to know the group but it’s always easy if you already have some connecting points, for sure it helps to know what Jesse wants from us players but of course to also know Brenden who also played in Salzburg and Rasmus, just to get connected to the team quicker and also get like this first, nervous days past a little bit better.”

“One of the biggest things is my personality, my character I think I’m never gonna give up on the pitch. I’m going to leave it all out. Doesn’t matter what, what score it is, if we’re winning or losing I’m gonna give everything for this badge.”
