Leeds United captain Robert Snodgrass felt the side could have left the Madejski stadium with all three points had he or Ross McCormack converted their chances in the second half against Reading.
Leeds had to play almost 80 minutes against the new league leaders after Zac Thompson was shown a straight red card
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Leeds held out until the 84th minute before Reading substitute Adam Le Fondre scored the opener from close range and Snodgrass felt they were punished for turning off.
Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Snodgrass said, “It was very frustrating. It was a bit like the Watford game when we turned off for the goals. It was ten men against the team at the top of the league and I thought we did very well. If Ross or me had taken our chances, I think we would have won the game.
Both McCormack and Snodgrass came close to giving Leeds the lead in the second half. McCormack saw his shot from distance clip the outside of the post and Snodgrass really should have done better when McCormack played him in. The Leeds skipper felt he had too much time on his hands after hitting his shot straight at Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici. “I probably had too much time on my hands. The ball was bouncing and it is harder to direct it into the corner,” continued Snodgrass.
Leeds were made to pay for their missed opportunities. Le Fondre chested in his first on the goal line after Tom Lees was beaten at the far post and the same player netted a second from close range after Jason Roberts shot across goal in the final minute of normal time.
Leeds now just have pride to play for in their final five games of the season and they entertain Derby County at Elland Road on Monday still looking for their first home win since the arrival of manager Neil Warnock.
