A look back at what happened on this day June 20th in the history of Leeds United.

Leeds have never played a game on this day in their history, so today we look back in the Vital Leeds archives of the last few years to see what was being reported.

Birthdays
1956 Peter Reid (58)

2007
Leeds United will travel to Ireland to face Shelbourne. The game will take play at Shelbourne`s Tolka Park, Dublin on the 7th July, kicking off at 7.30pm.

2008
Jonny Howson has signed a new contract with Leeds United that ties him to the club until 2011.

In an added twist, should Leeds United gain promotion (read: when) back to the Championship, Howson`s contract will be extended by a further year, taking him up until the year of the London Olympics, 2012. Boss Gary McAllister was obviously delighted with the news, as he told Leedsunited.com.

‘We’re all delighted. He’s a player who has come through the Academy and is a local lad which is a big plus,’ he said.

‘He’s got an eye for goal and he has a nice mix to his game.

‘He has a lot of potential and a lot of ammunition to develop his game and I’m pleased I’ve got the opportunity to help his development.’

2011
Leeds United boss Simon Grayson insists that Billy Paynter is still part of his plans at the club.

The striker had a disappointing first season at Elland Road, scoring just once in twenty-one appearances.

Paynter was linked last week to a move to Sheffield United, linking back up with his former Swindon Town boss Danny Wilson, who is now in charge at Bramall Lane.

Grayson insists he is still part of his plans and as had no contact from Sheffield United. Speaking in the Yorkshire Evening Post , Grayson said, ‘I`ve had no enquiries for Billy.
‘He had a stop-start season last year but I`m not looking to get rid of him because he`s a good player. When he did come into the team, he showed his quality.’

Leeds United have accepted a bid for goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel from fellow championship side Leicester City.

The official website have announced the news that they have accepted an undisclosed bid and Leeds boss Simon Grayson says ‘He feels it`s the right deal for the club’.

2012
Leeds United have made it two in two days after Paul Green agreed to sign a two year deal on July 1st.

Green has recently returned from representing Republic of Ireland at the European championships, where he made one substitutes appearances against Spain.

The 29 year old has arrived on a free transfer after coming to the end of his contract at Derby County.

The midfielder started his career at Doncaster Rovers, where he made over 250 appearances. He helped the side win promotion from non-league, where he scored in the play-off final against Dagenham and Redbridge in 2002, all the way to the championship.

Green signed for Derby the week after helping Doncaster win promotion to the championship in 2008 and he made almost 150 appearances in his four seasons at Pride Park.

The combative midfielder joins Adam Drury this week in agreeing to sign for Leeds on July 1st.

2013
Just one day after the fixtures are released, Leeds have their first games moved with the trip to Leicester City in August as well as the home game against Sheffield Wednesday being moved for TV coverage.
