Leeds United head coach Garry Monk says his side showed the fighting spirit within the squad as they scored a dramatic late equaliser at Newcastle United.

Chris Wood scored his 28th goal of the season in the fifth minute of injury time to earn Leeds a point in a 1-1 draw after they had been under the cosh for much of the game and Monk praised the mentality of his side to keep battling until the end.

‘We showed what a spirit we have, the determination not to give up until the end and that is what brought the goal,” Monk told the BBC.

‘We got the point that we are happy with, but I am really proud of the players – they never gave up.

‘What an amazing mentality they have created. We have played better but you need both. You need the mentality, the spirit but also the quality and we were able to show that quality in that single moment, which was important and sometimes that is all it takes.’

Newcastle looked to be heading for a win after Jamal Lascelles had given the home side the lead halfway through the second half and Leeds withstood immense pressure from the home side.

Leeds hadn`t had a shot on goal in the second half until Wood met a Kemar Roofe cross in the fifth minute of injury time to steer the ball past Karl Darlow and earn Leeds an unlikely point.

It could prove to be a crucial point come the end of the season after both Sheffield Wednesday and Fulham won to close the gap on Leeds in the play-off places.

The point for Leeds lifts them above Reading with the royals at Aston Villa today and there is just three points separate Leeds in fourth and Fulham in seventh with four games remaining.
