Leeds United clinched a dramatic late point in a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United.

Leeds looked to be heading towards a defeat after Jamal Lascelles had given the hosts the lead halfway through the second half but Chris Wood steered home a Kemar Roofe cross deep into stoppage time to claim a massive points for Leeds in their quest for a play-off place.

The goal for Wood was his 28th of the season, in a game where he had been given little opportunity as Newcastle laid siege on the Leeds goal in the second half.

Leeds started the game brightly and they came close to opening the scoring inside ten minutes. Alfonso Pedraza saw his shot from the edge of the area come back off the underside of the crossbar and Karl Darlow then did well to keep out Roofe`s follow-up header.

Newcastle started to take control of the game and Matt Ritchie saw his shot blocked by Wood after he had got in behind the Leeds defence.

Jonjo Shelvey almost caught Leeds at a corner when he whipped the ball in with Rob Green off his line but the veteran keeper got back to claw the ball away.

Newcastle finished the half strongly with Yoan Gouffran seeing his shot hit the foot of the post and Ritchie saw his follow-up effort deflected over by Pontus Jansson.

Chancel Mbemba then forced Green into a point-blank save after the defender had lost his man at a Newcastle corner.

Ayoze Perez then saw his shot deflected over from close range as Leeds hung on to go in at the break level.

The second half was one-way traffic with Green tipping a Ritchie free-kick around the post in the opening minutes.

Aleksandar Mitrovic then took advantage of a weak header back from Luke Ayling but Jansson was on hand to save his blushes as he cleared from under the bar with Serbia ready to score.

Newcastle went ahead minutes later when Mitrovic headed the ball across goal and Lascelles got above Kyle Bartley to head home despite Green`s attempts to keep the ball out.

Green was keeping Leeds in the game, he made another superb save to deny Perez from close-range, and his heroics were rewarded deep into stoppage time when Wood equalised.

Wood steered the ball home from close range after good work from Pablo Hernandez and a pinpoint cross from Roofe.

The point lifts Leeds up to fourth in the Championship table with just four games remaining but there are just three points separating Leeds and seventh placed Fulham in the table.
