LUFC Fans view v Ipswich

Tiny T gives us his usual fans view of the game after Saturday`s goalless draw against Ipswich Town.

Schmeichel 7

Some good early saves, but troubled little in the second half. His distribution was a little wayward at times.

Lichaj 7
Good going forward and solid at the back.

O’Brien 7
Reliable at the back and gave little away to the Ipswich front line.

Bromby 7 Star man
Solid and dependable, without being fancy. Filled in behind McCartney at times when needed.

McCartney 6
His decision making and passing at times was wayward and he was the weakest link at the back again.

Snodgrass 6
Didn’t see enough of the ball, and a little wasteful when he did, odd glimpses of his talent.

Howson 6
Not as energetic has he usually is. Why he was subbed was a mystery as he was around the box when needed.

Johnson 6
The pick of the midfield for me, protected the back four well, though some of his passing was poor.

Kilkenny 6
Slowed play down too much when we needed to be a little quicker.

Gradel 6
Some good chances in the first half with rasping drives but well marshalled by the Ipswich defence.

Paynter 6
Spent too much time battling for the ball in the air as we went long, but to his credit battled away and held it up when he got it.

Subs
Bannan 5

For me should have come on a little earlier

Becchio 5
Nothing really to feed off.

Summary
With Johnson playing just in front the defence we looked far more solid, work as obviously been done this week on defending and it showed, far more cohesive.
Surprising to see Howson being replaced with ten minutes to go as we lost his impetus and support up front.
I would have taken Kilkenny off but I’m not the manager.
With Gradel and Snodgrass well marshalled, we resorted to long ball and this played into the Ipswich game plan.
Unusually Grayson didn’t use his third sub and putting on an extra man up front may have paid dividends, but that`s an after thought.

We looked much better at the back, but we were well marshalled up front, we needed a spark from the bench and our substitutions are predictable. To change games like this we need something a little different.

The referee
Again we got a poor one, how he booked O’Brien when Priskin tripped himself up was unbelievable and he missed, along with his assistant the push on Paynter right in front of him, I do not know, especially as Grayson had a right go. But on the plus side he only booked Billy when after the game Eddie Gray said it could easily have been Red.
