Casper Ankergren finds himself in trouble with the FA. Should the UK and US Governments be taking an interest?
The Leeds United keeper, having a slightly more shaky season than his rock-solid performances of Leeds United Championship Departure party 2006/7 appears to have turned his attention towards modern warfare, rather than goalkeeping.
Ankergren has found himself on the end of a Football Association charge for ‘improper conduct’ during Leeds’ 1-0 victory over Swindon Town at the beginning of the month for allegedly throwing missiles.
It remains to be seen just what effect this will have on the Danish goalkeeper, but Vital Leeds does wonder if there is a risk that our first choice stopper will be whisked away on an un-marked aeroplane for an indefinite holiday in Cuba. It must me of some concern to the UK Government that a foreign national is throwing missiles about the West Country, and can only hope that in the nation’s interest some action is taken.
Furthermore, there hasn’t been official word from Moscow at the time of this article being published. The new Government of President-to-be Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin have previously expressed their disgust at a US-Plan to place a missile defence system close to Russian soil. The thought of a Danish keeper chucking missiles about the United Kingdom must naturally make them more nervous and can only further add to Anglo-Russian tensions.
As for the more serious footballing side of things, a personal hearing for Ankergren may see the player fined, banned, or both, depending on the severity of the atrocity that he has been accused of.
A Football Association statement, clearly missing the sensitive and potentially disasterous issue of inappropriate missile firing read:
“Leeds United goalkeeper Casper Ankergren has been charged with improper conduct.
“It is alleged that Ankergren threw a missile at Swindon Town supporters at the end of a game at the County Ground on 1 March.
“He has until 1 April to respond to the charge.”
Should Casper fail to respond to the FA Charge, it is unlikely that the bigwigs at Soho square will request a pre-emptive strike against the United goalkeeper.
