Leeds United suffered a third defeat in four games this month as struggling Sheffield Wednesday left Elland Road with all three points thanks to a late winner.

Jay-Roy Grot scored his first senior goal for Leeds but Atdhe Nuhiu scored twice for the visitors to claim all three points in blizzard conditions at Elland Road.

Both teams came into the game having won once each in 2018 and it was apparent in a game played with little quality.

Caleb Ekuban had the best chances for Leeds in the first half. The striker could only hit his shot straight at Joe Wildsmith in the Sheffield Wednesday goal after a well-worked free-kick. Minutes after, Ekuban wasted another great chance when he ballooned his left foot shot well over the bar.

Adam Reach had two good chances for the visitors. He had a good chance to open the scoring in the opening ten minutes when he was played in behind the Leeds defence but Bailey Peacock-Farrell raced off his line to block the shot.

Reach then had Peacock-Farrell at full stretch to push his long-range effort away from goal.

Sheffield Wednesday thought they had gone in ahead at the break when Sam Hutchinson headed home but his joy was short lived as the assistant raised his flag for offside.

Leeds started the second half brightly with Ezgjan Alioski and Gaetano Berardi both firing just wide.

Nuhiu went close for the visitors when his effort from the edge of the area landed on the roof of the net.

The striker made no mistake with just under 20 minutes remaining when he reacted quickest to poke home from close-range after Reach had seen his header hit the post.

Leeds responded and Pablo Hernandez could only fire straight at Wildsmith after finding space in behind the Owls defence.

Adam Forshaw then fired over as Leeds searched for an equaliser.

Leeds eventually drew level with just four minutes of normal time remaining when Grot headed home a Hernandez cross.

The home side were now in the ascendancy and they looked the most likely winners in the closing minutes but they were caught on the break in the first minute of injury time. Nuhiu found himself one-on-one with defender Matthew Pennington and the striker showed his strength to win possession before coolly slotting the ball under Peacock-Farrell.

Leeds have now won just one of their thirteen games in 2018.
