Leeds in the hunt for Premier League defender, current club say he can go – Report

|

Looks like I might get something right for once.

New signing Ben White put in a fine display on Sunday, gaining himself plaudits from both fans and his manager, with Marcelo Bielsa saying he was “one of the best players in the match”.

However despite his performance, Leeds could be in the process of bringing in some extra help for the back-line, and given the way they dealt with Andreas Weimann’s goal by just letting him waltz through pretty much untouched, it might not be the worst thing to bring in some defensive reinforcements.

Reports from TeamTalk over the weekend, suggested that Leeds were in the hunt to sign young Tottenham defender Cameron Carter-Vickers. Spurs have made the decision to send him out on loan again having spent the last two seasons in the division. There are a host of Championship clubs after the 21-year-old American including Fulham, West Brom, Derby, Bristol City, Middlesbrough, Luton and Barnsley according to them.

I have said before that I think Carter-Vickers is someone that Leeds needed to be looking at, and even though it seems United are going to stick with what they have for the upcoming season, I still think it would be a good option for them to explore. Marcelo Bielsa has spoken before about his preference to carry a small squad, and given White’s performance against Bristol City, it looks as if he could hold down that centre-back role for the rest of the season.

However, I still maintain that Leeds are going down a dangerous path by having so few centre-backs in the squad, having just one more would be so invaluable to the squad because it would give them that extra bit of cover.

As I said last week, if one of the centre-backs were to be missing for a lengthy period, it would mean Kalvin Phillips would have to drop into the back-line and given how crucial he is to the setup as a defensive midfielder, it would be setting Leeds back.

At the moment, it looks as if the decision to play Ben White and Liam Cooper together has some potential, but the moment it gets broken, then Leeds find themselves in trouble, and if that does happen Cameron Carter-Vickers should be the solution.
