Leeds United fought back to earn a point against Bristol City in Paul Heckingbottom`s first game in charge at Elland Road.

A game of two halves saw Bristol City lead 2-0 at the break but two goals in the final 20 minutes ensured it wasn`t a losing start for Heckingbottom on home soil.

Bristol City looked to be putting another nail into the coffin of Leeds play-off hopes as they scored twice inside the opening 16 minutes of the game.

Famara Diedhiou put the visitors ahead on 11 minutes when he capitalised on a mistake by Felix Wiedwald in the Leeds goal.

Wiedwald flapped at a deep throw-in and Diedhiou eventually got the ball under control to fire home.

Bristol City doubled their lead five minutes later and this time Bobby Reid was on hand to turn the ball home from close range.

The visitors had chances to score a third with Wiedwald redeeming himself to deny Ryan Kent and Diedhiou.

Leeds rarely looked like scoring but they were thrown a lifeline on 72 minutes when Pierre-Michel Lasogga turned the ball home at the far post.

Bristol City threw away a three goal lead against Sunderland last weekend in the final 20 minutes and having looked comfortable, they robins suddenly looked nervous and Leeds made them pay on 80 minutes when substitute Kemar Roofe slid the ball home at the far post.

Leeds were now fully in the ascendency and Adam Forshaw guided an effort just wide of the post.

Kalvin Phillips then headed wide at the far post as Leeds searched for a winner and it almost came with the last play of the game. Pablo Hernandez delivered a cross deep and Lasogga rose but he could only watch on agonisingly as his header cannoned out off the crossbar.

A draw was probably a fair result in the end in a game that swung one way and then the other.
