Leeds booked their place in the last eight of the Capital One League Cup with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Southampton.

Goals from Michael Tonge, El Hadji Diouf and Luciano Becchio booked their place in the quarter finals for the first time since 1996.

Leeds missed a gilt-edged chance to take the lead in the first fifteen minutes when Luke Varney somehow managed to miss the target from a yard out with the goal at his mercy.

Varney was carrying the main threat for Leeds in the opening half hour, one effort going just wide and then another coming back off the crossbar.

Rodolph Austin also went close to opening the scoring when he headed just wide but they didn`t have to wait much longer before a ball in from Varney found Michael Tonge who fired home for his third goal of the season with ten minutes of the half remaining.

The goal was thoroughly deserved for Leeds as they went in at the break ahead.

Leeds continued to control the second half but without a cutting edge up front whilst they limited Southampton to little chance on their goal in the opening thirty minutes of the half.

Leeds wrapped the tie up with five minutes remaining when Kelvin Davies could only push out an Austin effort and El Hadji Diouf was on hand to score.

There was still time for a third when Luciano Becchio scored from the penalty spot after a foul on Michal Tonge.
