On their Official website and Twitter account, Leeds United have announced the signing of well travelled goalkeeper Joel Robles.

The experienced, 32 year old keeper joins on a free transfer from Spanish La Liga side Real Betis, after his contract expired at the Estadio Benito Villamarín earlier this summer. He has penned a one-year deal at Elland Road, running until the summer of 2023, and will be good competition for Illan Meslier. His experience will be beneficial to both Meslier and Kristoffer Klaesson, in their future development.

The former Spanish youth international, came through the ranks at Atletico Madrid and went onto make seven appearances for the club, before joining Rayo Vallecano on loan.

Following this, he linked up with then Premier League side Wigan Athletic in January 2013 in a temporary deal and made 13 appearances in all competitions, including the FA Cup final, in which Roberto Martinez’s side defeated Manchester City at Wembley, Robles kept a clean sheet in a memorable 1-0 win. He then moved on to Everton and in his time on Merseyside, Robles made 65 outings in all competitions, before moving to Betis at the end of his contract in 2018.

Robles becomes the club’s eighth signing of the transfer window, meaning Leeds have good depth in the goalkeeper department. Jesse Marsch will be hoping to tie up another deal or two before the transfer window slams shut on the 1st September.
