Leeds United’s German defender Robin Koch has become the latest player that has missed out on selection for the World Cup tournament.

Germany coach Hansi Flick has left Leeds United’s Robin Koch out of his 2022 World Cup squad, and the former SC Freiburg defender, couldn’t have possibly done any more to get a place on the plane to Qatar. Koch has been in fine form this season for the Whites and has been one of their best players so far in a tough season in the Premier League. Leeds had found themselves in the relegation places until two games ago when late goals at Anfield and against Bournemouth saw them leap into mid-table. Although the defence has looked sloppy for most parts this season, the German centre-back has stood out and earned praise from the fans.

Considering the defensive partnerships have never had the chance to blossom at Elland Road this season, and there has been a different back-line for nearly every game, Koch has been the ever-present in the back four. He has partnered with Diego Llorente, Liam Cooper and Pascal Struijk and he has been pivotal in the Leeds team all season. One of the players who has been a solid 7 every game, and I thought the 26-year-old would have done enough to be going to the World Cup next week. This is a clear indication that the Germans are going with a different approach this year with regulars like Mats Hummels and Marco Reus not selected either.

Are you surprised Robin Koch has been left out?

Yes, he's been good

No, not good enough

No, not good enough

Koch is the latest Leeds player to miss out as news broke yesterday that Mateusz Klich would not be called up for the Poland team, a shock to all as he has been the mainstay in the national side who are now coached by Czesław Michniewicz. Klich has not featured as much as he would have liked for Leeds this season and you feel that was his last chance at a major tournament with the national team as he turns 33 next summer.
