Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills has shared his doubts over the long term future of goalkeeper Kiko Casilla at Elland Road.

The Whites’ number one was a regular selection by Marcelo Bielsa after joining the club on a free transfer from Real Madrid last summer.

The Mirror previously revealed that Illan Meslier, who has been impressive for Leeds since he stepped in for Casilla, and could be rewarded for his performances as his loan spell from Lorient could also be changed, activating his £6m buy-out clause.

The Spanish shot-stopper is currently serving an eight-match ban after he racially abused Charlton Athletic striker Jonathan Leko.

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills is not sure that the Spaniard is the man that Leeds need if they are promoted to the top-flight.

Should Kiko Casilla play for Leeds United again?

Yes

No

“Leeds need an experienced back-up keeper, but that may well not be Casilla.

“He’s great on the ball, we know that. He’s the most relaxed goalkeeper I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s phenomenal how calm he is, it really is. He’s calmer than most outfield players.

“There are quite a few heart in mouth moments when you watch him. He’ll give you heart palpitations from time to time, that is for sure, but he’s also made some good saves and he’s had some good performances at times.”

Mills went on to question whether he can be good enough, as far as consistency is concerned, to play in the Premier League.

Casilla joined the club last summer after putting pen to paper on a four-year contract and has managed to keep 15 clean sheets from 35 appearances in the Championship.

However, he has conceded 30 goals and has made a handful of errors that may have hampered Leeds’ promotion push, particularly against Brentford earlier in the season.

If Bielsa brings Casilla back into the first-team setup, and whether he can eradicate the errors from his game, then Mills will be proved wrong and he could be a success in England’s top tier.

After what has been an eventful season for the 33-year-old, questions remain as to whether he’ll be accepted by the fans again.
