Leeds United youngster Sam Greenwood has been tipped for a midfield role by former Whites striker Noel Whelan, As per LeedsLive via Twitter.

The former Arsenal youth academy player was always used to playing in a more advanced role with his preferred position being a striker or anywhere across a front three. When he has featured this season, Leeds coach Jesse Marsch has played the 20-year-old in more of a midfield capacity and even as a defensive midfielder in some games. It looked as though he was used as an attacking midfielder in the win over Bournemouth, and his superb goal was more reminiscent of a Pablo Hernandez strike.

Noel Whelan has spoken about Greenwood and he sees him as more of an advanced midfielder in Jesse Marsch’s system. He said, “I think this role is his best role now, I remember seeing him start against Arsenal – I thought he was a striker. He came into the club as a striker and played in the Under-23s as a striker.”

“But he likes to play in between the opposition lines, picking up that space in between midfield and defence. He likes to get around, he likes to be athletic – but he’s still got a striker’s instinct. We saw that with his goal – it was great technique.”

“That goal gave us the belief. He will be very important for Leeds United. If he has another good game against Wolves in the League Cup, he will be full of confidence. These young players coming through have the quality which is going to help us for the rest of the season.”

This just goes to prove how versatile some of the Leeds youngsters can be, and it looks like they don’t care where they play, they just want to play for the love of the game and give their all for the famous white jersey. Jesse Marsch has stated in the past that Greenwood is the player who has adapted and grasped his system the best, so we may be seeing more of Sam in an advanced midfield role from now on. Whether it be from the bench or in the starting line-up, there is a crop of very talented youngsters at the club right now. The future of Leeds United looks to be in safe hands.
