Leeds United bounced back from their midweek defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers with a comfortable 2-0 win at Barnsley.

First half goals from Samu Saiz and Ezgjan Alioski ensured Leeds won the Yorkshire derby at Oakwell.

Leeds started brightly with a succession of corners and Alioski had Leeds best opportunity of the opening quarter when he volleyed just wide.

Saiz gave Leeds the lead on 23 minutes when the diminutive Spaniard found space on the edge of the area before firing past Barnsley goalkeeper Adam Davies.

Leeds denied Barnsley any real chances on goal in the first half and they ensured they went in at half time with daylight between them and their Yorkshire neighbours when Alioski curled the ball home from the edge of the area for his fourth goal in four consecutive games.

Barnsley made two changes at half time in the hope they could get back into the game but Leeds continued to control the pace and they came close to extending their lead. Pablo Hernandez saw his free-kick deflected just wide with Davies beaten in the Barnsley goal.

Caleb Ekuban was making his first start for Leeds since August, the striker worked hard in attack, and he came close to scoring when he was denied by a good save from Davies although the referee gave a goal kick.

Liam Cooper also had a good chance but he could only head straight at Davies.

Barnsley rarely threatened the Leeds goal with goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald having a comfortable afternoon on his return to the Leeds side. His only concern was having the low sun in his eyes in the first half and he was helped out by a helpful Leeds fan behind the goal who gave the German goalkeeper his baseball cap.
