Leeds hardly threatened in a tight second half against Wolves and their hopes were virtually scuppered when stand-in right-back Simon Walton was sent off eight minutes from time.

The youngster, who was also dismissed in his debut for the club in a friendly as a 16-year-old, had earlier been yellow-carded for a foul on man of the match Joleon Lescott when he pushed Kenny Miller away with his arm in a chase for the ball.

Referee Chris Foy had no hesitation in reaching for his pocket for the second time.

Kevin Blackwell: ‘I’m disappointed with the decision and think a lot of people were surprised by it.

‘It seemed harsh and the kid is absolutely distraught. He’s proud to be a Leeds player and he takes it to heart.

‘I was looking for a response and we looked a good side in the first half but the football was not as incisive as it might have been, although their were two decent sides out there.

‘I had three kids in my back four and thought they stood up well and showed they have a future.’
