Leeds United have been boosted by the news that Gaetano Berardi and Matthew Pennington are close to a return.

The pair have been missing since suffering injuries in the opening weekend of the season win at Bolton Wanderers.

Berardi was stretchered from the field in the first half of the game with a dislocated shoulder whilst Pennington, who was impressing on his Leeds debut having joined the club on a season-long loan from Everton, was forced off with an ankle injury in the second half.

Christiansen has kept his cards close to his chest when asked about the pair previously but he revealed ahead of the Sunderland game that the pair are not far away from a return.

“I believe that Gaetano will come in very soon and Matthew can take a little bit longer but not too much longer,” Christiansen told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“I believe that after the (international) break they could be in.”

Leeds face three games in the next week before a two-week break due to the international break before returning with the clash against Burton Albion when the Championship returns on September 9th.
