A New Leeds In Town?

Farsley Celtic, newly promoted to the Blue Squad Premier (formally the Conference National) wish to turn their backs on 100 years of history by renaming themselves FC Leeds or Leeds Celtic, as not a great deal of people seem to know exactly where Farsley is.

Farsley chairman Andy Firbank said: ‘It comes down to what’s best for Farsley Celtic as a club.

‘If we need to change our name to take us up another level from a crowd support point of view then that’s what we need to do.’

He did however deny that they are simply trying to cash in on the fact that the real-Leeds, Leeds United are struggling to work out between themselves as to whether there will be a club in existence come the start of the new season. My personal view is that they are indeed trying to promote themselves as an “alternative” to the local big named club, and this isn`t on as they don`t particularly have valid grounds to do so.

When Wimbledon F.C. moved 60 miles away to the roundabout-mad Milton Keynes, a group of supporters decided they didn`t fancy confusing themselves on the many parallel roads, nor call a former hockey stadium “home” and therefore set up their own club. FC United fans however are a breakaway group who were upset with the takeover that was completed by Tampa Bay Buccaneers Chief Malcolm Glazier. Oh how silly they must feel now watching non-league football, still a good idea at the time lads?I think not!

We at Vital Leeds United are a caring sort, and as a substitute idea we`ve decided to help those who don`t know anything about Farsley Celtic, and the town of Farsley itself:

A Short Vital Leeds Guide To Farsley

Farsley itself is a district of Leeds, situated just 9km (6 miles in old money) to the west of the city centre and can be found just off the A6110 ‘Leeds Outer Ring Road.` Apart from that there is nothing much of note, except the local railway station of New Pudsey was once featured in a Monty Python sketch. Alcohol-lovers will no doubt be disgusted to know that according to Wikipedia, there are just 4 of the 11 pubs left in the town of Farsley. 4 pubs, that`d see me through a night that!

A Short Vital Leeds Guide To Farsley Celtic

Farsley Celtic AFC were formed in 1908 and have been plying their trade at Throstle Nest, which is now also the home of Leeds Met Carnegie. Last season saw Farsley come up against the mighty Hinckley United in the Conference North playoffs, a 4-3 victory seeing them home and dry to start this year in the re-named Blue Square Premier division. A current notable squad member is none other than Martin Pemberton, formally of Scunthorpe, Mansfield and Stockport. It was at Stockport where Pemberton really did get his 5 minutes of fame, having been involved with the delightfully gorgeous Girls Aloud “singer” Kimberley Walsh.

So there you go Mr Firbank. I`ve just saved you the effort of changing your name by explaining to the world just who the heck you are.
