Would Defeat Ruin Leeds?

Already the axe is swung on the two Championship sides that lost their play-off games. Could it happen to Leeds if the unthinkable happened?

Preston North End manager Billy Davies has been strongly linked with a move to Tennent’s Scottish Cup winners Hearts. And Crystal Palace have a major battle ahead keeping hold of their star striker.

An ex-Rangers player, Davies has been in charge at Deepdale since succeeding Craig Brown in August 2004. He guided the side to the play-offs in successive seasons, losing in the final to West Ham last year and Leeds in the semi this. And he is already thinking about leaving.

‘I will only leave if myself and the board of directors feel it is the right thing for the club and for me. If that happens then I’ll look at it,’ he told the Edinburgh Evening News.

Crystal Palace have refused to confirm reports of Wigan tabling a £5million bid for England striker Andrew Johnson.

The England international is attracting interest from a host of Premiership clubs after Palace failed in their bid to return to the top flight.

Johnson’s desire to return to the Premiership as soon as possible will no doubt have been heightened by the fact that he only made the standby list for this summer’s World Cup squad, with England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson preferring untried 17-year-old Theo Walcott to a proven goalscorer plying his trade in the Championship.

A Palace spokesman said: ‘We have seen the speculation but we haven’t had anything confirmed as yet.’
