Leeds United boss Neil Warnock says he missed out on Chris Burke and Jerome Thomas on transfer deadline day.
Birmingham winger Burke is out of contract in the summer but Leeds failed to reach the asking price of the St Andrews club, a valuation Warnock thought was too high for a player in the last six months of his current deal.
Speaking on the Leeds United official website, Warnock said, ‘We did make a substantial offer for Chris.
‘I believe that both us and Forest offered the same amount, but I thought that Birmingham’s valuation was very high for a player who is out of contract at the end of the season.
‘That would have been the icing on the cake to get all my targets”
Warnock also tried to tempt Jerome Thomas back to Elland Road. Thomas spent time on loan with the club before the New Year making seven appearances and the Leeds boss admits he spoke to the winger but looked to have missed out on the player after fellow championship side Blackburn Rovers came in with a lucrative offer. ‘I spoke with Jerome Thomas on deadline day as well. He’s gone to Blackburn and fair play to him. They’ve paid a good fee for him and he’s on good Premier League wages there. He’s probably on more than he was at West Brom,” added Warnock.
Thomas saw his move to Blackburn hit a stumbling block at the eleventh hour and he has returned to parent club West Brom.
Warnock admits that he will now look to strengthen on the wing when the loan window opens although he admits he will not be looking to bring Burke in on loan. “The Burke deal is now dead until the summer.
‘I had said that I was looking to bring a wide man in, and we’ll have a look when the loan market re-opens and see where we are and what we need.’
The loan window re-opens on Friday February 8th.
