After a brief rest period, the Oakwood Owls are back on Vital Leeds United with yet another impressive victory.
Following the end of their first season at Soccer City, the Oakwood Owls returned to match action with a 4-3 friendly victory over local rivals Halton Moor Juniors at their Fearnville home.
Rod Christopher, leader of the Oakwood Owls gives us his match report:
This 30 minutes each way 8a-side match pitted the Oakwood squad against proper club opposition and the match eventually exploded on 24 mins as Halton took the lead after some good team play. A dazzling shot from distance caused panic in the Owls defence, leaving Halton’s main striker with an easy tap in to put his side ahead. Good chances went begging for both sides from here, with Farrar hitting a post for Owls on the stroke of half time and then Kinghorn hit a screamer, almost restoring parity on the refs half time whistle.
A frank, no nonsense half time talk seemed to awaken the Owls, as the squad were instructed to play at a much quicker tempo, implementing a three touch football on the deck style and looking to get in behind the Halton defence. Midfielders Temple and Major began to show their true talent and the change in tactics began to pay off early in the second period, with both Farrar and Major bagging fine strikes in a two minute surge to put Owls in front at 2-1 on 35. Both goals were the result of excellent fluent team passing moves involving up to 6 players, but it was Halton who were again to notch next, as a lapse in defence allowed another easy goal for ‘Moor to draw level.
Again Oakwood pressed forward time and time again, with Captain Kinghorn at last ending another set piece move with a first time left foot finish from the edge of the box on 46. Halton now looked deflated, but kept working hard with a number of near misses, then drawing equal on 54 after a brilliant run & shot which stunned the Owls side. Striker Rodley was to be the Owls saviour this week, as he muscled past 2 Halton players, before unleashing an unstoppable powerful drive high into the net on 59. The final minute saw both sides again going close, but Owls held out for a famous 4-3 victory and ending the hoodoo that Halton seemed to hold over them over the past few years.
