Former Leeds United defender Tony Dorigo has labelled new striker Wilfried Gnonto’s latest achievement as “remarkable”.

Title-winning left-back and LUTV broadcaster Tony Dorigo has spoken about the achievements of the  summer signing from FC Zurich and was very impressed with his first start for his country, since he signed for The Whites. In a recent interview with the YorkshireEveningPost, he said “It doesn’t matter what Roberto Mancini’s attacking options are right now, Willy Gnonto starting for Italy at 18 is remarkable.”

He added, “Mancini is clearly trying to change his side drastically, a lot of the old guard have left and he’s looking for new stars but up top has been a problem in recent years for Italy, when he came on, Italy suddenly had something completely different, that ability and trickery to take someone on and produce something, to make things happen.”

Leeds signed the 18-year-old from Zurich in a deal worth around £4.5m. Although he was the third or fourth choice after deals for Charles De Ketelaere, Arnaud Kalimuendo and Bamba Dieng all came to nothing, he has certainly been shown a great deal of trust by Italy coach Roberto Mancini. Gnonto has played 6 games already for his country, and at his age, just shows how much potential he has.

He started in the Leeds U21s game last week and looked the part. Although he didn’t get his name on the scoresheet, he certainly showed what he is all about. He was energetic and powerful and he was very good in the press. Jesse Marsch will have enjoyed what he has seen so far. Gnonto will now have to work hard and stake a claim for himself in the first team.

Tony Dorigo added “There’s no doubt, however, that he is looking like a player who could make an impact for Jesse Marsch this season in the English top flight. Coming off the bench is the obvious next step and we know we need that in the final third.”
