These moves will count for nothing if there’s no celebrations come May – opinion

Have we all calmed down yet?

Yes, it’s been quite a marvelous week to be a Leeds United fan hasn’t it? It started off with the loan signings of Jack Harrison and Ben White. Liam McCarron soon followed through but this time his move from Carlisle was a permanent one.

Then we had the departure of, then sudden re-emergence of Jack Clarke and his move to Spurs. Finally, the one we were all waiting for, after weeks of build-up and Nothing But Leeds on the verge of being labelled a ‘troll’ for their constant spamming, Helder Costa made the move to Yorkshire as well.

There were even some boosts in the academy too, with Rafa Mujica and Guille Amor joining the club, adding to my belief that this signals Marcelo Bielsa intends to be here for a long time, maybe even seeing Leeds as a project that he can take back to the glory days right at the top of English football and beyond.

Now it’s time to get serious though.

After the hopes of promotion coming into last year, boosted by the arrival of famed head coach Marcelo Bielsa, last season was meant to be ‘the season’, but it ended in disaster at home to Derby County. That should act as a warning going into this one, do not start getting ahead of yourselves.

There’s a reason why some call the Championship the toughest league in the world, because you never know what results lie around the corner. Need I remind you of what happened against Wigan? Or Ipswich?

All this joy and jubilation that fans are feeling right now, could all be for nothing. These moves are huge gambles for the club, and they can’t afford to get them wrong, literally. These moves are made with the obvious thing in mind, promotion to the Premier League and all the riches they entail.

We know the problems that Football League clubs have faced in spending to try and achieve promotion, only to come up short. That’s why this season is do or die for Leeds. Having come so close last year, and making so many improvements to the squad, this season simply has to be ‘the season’ that United get out of this division.

If Leeds do not end up promoted this season, then serious questions will need to be asked of everyone, the players, the manager and even the board, because they will never get a better opportunity than this.
