As the rumour mill shifted into gear ahead of the January transfer window opening, it was being reported that Bournemouth striker and former England and Tottenham Hotspur man, Jermain Defoe could be available this month owing to a lack of game time at his current club.
With 142 goals for Spurs in 360 games, the now 36-year-old still has a season or two in him as he looks towards winding down his long career, and plenty of Leeds United fans on social media believe that if a suitable financial deal could be done, he’d be a massive addition to the group as we gun for promotion back to the Premier League under manager Marcelo Bielsa in the campaign of 2018/19.
With a reported wage of over £100,000 a week, even 40% of that could prove problematic for Leeds depending on where we sit with the various regulations (irrespective of whether that’s a loan or a free transfer) and I’m actually not sure he’s a Bielsa kind of player either.
These fans seem convinced of his qualities though and I can understand their point.
Sign Defoe in the Championship and you go up simple as that. Would bag for fun.

He would bring a wealth of experience and a touch of cool headed class.

Would love #LUFC to sign Defoe but can't see it happening due to wage demands. But the fact is we sign Defoe and we go up – simple as! #MOT

Remember Dougie Freedman signing? Let's get Jermaine Defoe in. That's literally the most Chapman-Esque signing you could wish for. His goals would seal automatic promotion in absolutely positive on that #lufc #leedsunited @NoelDavidWhelan
