“The Future Of Leeds” – Whelan Wants To See More Of 18 y/o Prospect In 2019/20

|

With Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa picking a mixed squad for our mini tour of Australia this pre-season, 18-year-old talent Ryan Edmondson was one of the players who stayed behind and the young lad certainly made his mark in the friendly against Tadcaster the other day as he helped himself to a hattrick.

Having had a great 2018/19 campaign for Carlos Corberan’s Under 23 side, plenty of fans continue to have high hopes for the youngster and plenty are hoping to see him have a greater role in Bielsa’s first team this season as he continues to develop as a player.

Former player and now BBC pundit Noel Whelan has been raving about the lad again recently but he did comment that he thought it was a mistake when it came to Edmondson not being included in the Aussie tour.

“Ryan Edmondson, he’s got a hat-trick this week, I would have liked to see him out there to be quite honest with you. To see him integrated into the first-team a bit more. I’m disappointed he hasn’t been taken across to Australia with the team and given that opportunity because he’s a player I’ve been impressed with for a while now. I felt he should have been more involved last season. He wasn’t even on the bench at times. He’s been banging in goals for fun, he’s a big, strong boy, he’s something different to what we have in strikers. I’m really surprised he’s not gone out and when I see the goals that he’s taken against Tadcaster – fantastic. He could be the future of Leeds United but he needs to be integrated. He should have gone across.”

We’ve already seen that Bielsa will include youngsters when needed and with our gaffer not being in Australia for long, maybe he is taking a closer look at Edmondson and others and simply took the time to spend longer with them on the training pitch, hence they remained behind.
