“The First To Leave” – Former Leeds Player Makes Release Clause Claim

|

Given the interest reportedly expressed in key Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips during last summers transfer window, it doesn’t take a huge leap to think his future will feature on the rumour mill both in January and next summer – despite the player recently penning a new long term deal at Elland Road.

With the new deal being signed, it was always an educated guess to assume that promises had been made privately with the 23-year-old about next summer given his Premier League aspirations and there was always a huge likelihood that we would’ve allowed a release clause in the deal to fulfil that promise – whilst watching our own back for Financial Fair Play reasons.

Former Leeds United striker and now BBC pundit Noel Whelan has now confirmed the existence of the release clause, and whilst not (rightly) revealing the exact fee, few will disagree with his comments about our chances of keeping both him, and on loan Ben White, as it’s very much a case of stating the obvious I would think.

“Kalvin and Ben White will be the first to leave. Obviously, Ben’s on loan from Brighton and any chance of signing him permanently will be over if we don’t go up. He’s too good to be in the Championship for another year and he’ll be in the Premier League next season, whether that’s for Brighton or someone else. Kalvin’s contract is based on promotion. He has a release clause allowing him to go for a set price – more than £20million – if we don’t go up.”

What matters, given we entered the November international break in third place in the Championship table, is that hopefully by the time the next one rolls around that we’ve made up for our slow attacking start to 2019/20 and we’ve got ourselves in top spot – fingers crossed with a decent advantage margin – and then the Phillips question goes out of the equation and we wonder if there’s a deal to be done for 22-year-old White.

If Leeds Blow Promotion Again, Would You Begrudge Phillips His Premier League Shot?
